Don’t Play Cash Game Style in a Sit and Go Tournament

There is a big difference in the way a poker player plays in a casino, and the way that they play poker in a sit and go tournament. The first main difference is that cash game style poker players have the ability to leave a game whenever they want to. This is not the case for sit and go tournament players. Once the player has paid their buy-in and entry fee to the cashier they are committed to the tournament. The only ways that they can leave the tournament is if they lose all of their chips and they are eliminated from the tournament, or if they win all of the chips and they win the sit and go tournament. This difference is one of the reasons why it is not practical to interchange the poker strategies used in a cash game, with those used in a sit and go tournament situations

The second difference between a cash game style poker game and a sit and go poker tournament is re-buy options that a player has. In a cash style game the player is allowed to re-buy as many chips as they want, as long as they have funds to cover the new chips the player never has to worry about being eliminated from the game. On the other hand in a sit and go poker tournament the player doesn’t have the opportunity to re-buy chips if they run out, except under special circumstances. There are special re-buy sit and go poker tournaments that are available to players. There are different types of tournaments but this type of sit and go allows its players to re-buy chips when they want to during the early rounds of the tournament; however, after a certain cutoff point the player is no longer able to re-buy any more chips. From that point on once they run out of chips then they are eliminated from the sit and go tournament. All other sit and go poker tournaments use a freezeout format. In the freezeout format once the player is out of chips they are out of the tournament. This difference is risk is another reason why cash game strategies and sit and go tournament strategies can’t be interchanged.

The final difference between a cash style poker game and a sit and go poker tournament is the time investment that is required for each. A player in a cash style poker game is not required to stay for a specific time duration. They can leave at any time they want, as long as they follow basic etiquette. However, a sit and go poker tournament player has to remain at the tournament table until they have been eliminated or until they have won the tournament. If they abandon their seat without permission to take a break they can lose their chips and their place in the sit and go. This is yet one other reason why cash style poker game strategies and sit and go poker tournament strategies can’t be interchanged.
